Youth Against Crime

Toledo has experienced over 13 youth killed due to gun violence. As a result the community came together to hold a week dedicated to eliminating gun violence among our teens. We wanted to build a sculpture that spoke to that.  The idea of a gun barrel being crushed the the hand of the community came up so of course we had to figure out how to get that message across.  Taking an almost 4ft pipe, Dane heated it and pounded it repetitively in order to give it that crushed barrel look.  Then cutting a hand out of a sheet of steel and forming it around the barrel. What made this event so unique was that we were working with kids that had never seen blacksmithing done. Not only did we get to share our art but also our trade.  Teaching our youth that there are all kinds of unique jobs out there that they might not have thought of.
